Top 12 Green IT Vendors

Computerworld just published their list of top green IT vendors. An interesting list of companies who are aggressively pursuing green data center practices but what was really interesting was not who was on the list but who was not. Neither IBM nor EMC “make the cut”. Admittedly it has been some time since I was exposed to either EMC’s or IBM’s green initiatives but not to have them included in a list of the top 12 green IT Vendors signals either a failure in the integrity of the survey or a reflection of a choice by these companies to not participate.

With regard to the surveys integrity, the methodology looked good with a comprehensive look at executive offices attitudes, data center practices, recycling, green personnel practices and a commitment to using technology to drive green efficiencies. These are all areas where both EMC and IBM have made substantial investments and considering their well publicized green positioning and environmental initiatives it would suggest that they would score high in such a survey.

So did they really fall short when compared to Fujitsu, Dell, NetApp, Verizon, Intel, HP, Qualcomm, Accenture, Terremark Worldwide Inc, Microsoft, Symantec and Affordable Internet Services Online or did these vocal proponents of green IT simply not participate?

At least this enquiring mind would like to know.
